Meet Troop Guide Kevin Hicks

Among those serving as troop guides of Gilwell Troop 1 is Kevin Hicks, a volunteer leader in the Saugahatchee District. He serves as an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 15 and associate crew adviser for Crew 15 — both chartered by the Auburn Supply Chain Institute.

In addition to his experience as a Webelos Scout, Kevin has served as an adult leader for nearly eight years. In addition to his current volunteer responsibilities, he has served as cubmaster, merit badge counselor, and Eagle project coach. He frequently accompanies Scouts in his troop to summer camp, and this past summer attended Philmont Scout Ranch for the first time. He is also a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. Through his service, he has received several training-related awards, as well as the God and Service Protestant adult religious award.

Kevin attended the most recent Chattahoochee Council Wood Badge Course — S9-91-12 — and was a member of the Bear Patrol. While this is his first opportunity to staff a Wood Badge course, he has frequently staffed council-level, leader-specific training programs, which has included serving as course director for Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills/Outdoor Webelos Leader Skills training, National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) assistant scoutmaster for team guides, and backup course director for the upcoming National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course in 2014.

Professionally, Kevin is a radiation physicist for the State of Alabama Department of Public Health. He and wife Kathy have two sons in Troop 15, Jack, who earned the rank of Eagle Scout in November 2013, and Kyle.
