Meet Troop Guide Chuck Abbey

Muskogee District Scouter Chuck Abbey is serving as one of several troop guides for Gilwell Troop 1. Chuck also serves as scoutmaster of Troop 27, based in Columbus and chartered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10558. As a troop guide, he will mentor his patrol, facilitate some patrol activities, and assist patrol members as they prepare and complete their Wood Badge tickets.

A Scout in the Allegheny Highlands Council, based in Falconer, N.Y., Chuck joined Cub Scouts in 1976 and eventually earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1987 as a Boy Scout in Troop 162. While a Scout, he was a frequent summer camp staff member and member of the Sea Explorers, as well as an active Order of the Arrow member and Ho-Nan-Ne-Ho-Ont Lodge 165 lodge officer. Chuck began his tenure as a Chattahoochee Council volunteer leader in 2005. He has served on the pack level as an assistant den leader; on the troop level as a committee member, assistant scoutmaster, and scoutmaster; and the district level as a member of the training committee and Eagle board of review panel. In 2013, he has served as first assistant scoutmaster of the council’s 2013 National Boy Scout Jamboree Contingent A223, dean of Boy Scouting for the council’s Scouting University, and as Vigil adviser for Chattahoochee Lodge 204. He is a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, and a recipient of several adult leader training awards.

Chuck originally attended Chattahoochee Council Wood Badge Course SR-1078 (2010) and was a member of the Eagle Patrol. While this represents his first time staffing a Wood Badge course, he has staffed numerous Outdoor Leader Skills, Leader-Specifics and other training and advancement programs.

Professionally, Chuck is an analyst with SERCO in Columbus. He is married to Jennifer, who is also on the S9-91-14 staff as an assistant quartermaster. Together, they have two sons: Matthew and Christopher who are progressing on the Trail to Eagle as Scouts in Troop 27.
